3d art requires a lot of practice and failures, it's tough getting a solid footing in a 3d package. But try following some tutorials, there's a bunch for 3ds Max. -

The links I linked are mostly theory, so in practice they transfer over to UE4 too (since it's also PBR), so don't sweat it too much. :) -

This isn't an actual texture for anything its just a slate im practicing on. The top and the bottom are both the same except the top has crappy fake lighting. -
