I personally quit school as soon as I noticed they had nothing part from basics to teach. You just have to get off your ass and make models. You wont get a job as character artist unless you study the shit out of anatomy and then make many top notch AAA characters. Cartoon characters might get you a job as 3D artist in…
The degree itself will not be a detriment, particularly to your ability as an environment artist due to your background in architecture. The key will be demonstrating what you know via a portfolio. For that, reference Artstation. A case in point on how a background in architecture is useful to environment artists is the…
First of all, thanks for taking the time to post here at Polycount. With all due respect, I hate the ribbon in AutoCAD and in 3ds Max. I don't see how it's any better than a standard menu bar. It comes across as very gimmicky. If it was similar to InDesign and Photoshop, where only the tool you select jumps out, it would…
The fact that the bureaucracy of a school makes it difficult for well intentioned instructors to get funding to provide material really seems like a better argument in favor of not giving them anything. "Donating" material for free just because an instructor begs for it simply rewards the institution for their obstinance.…
I'll throw out what I say in most of these threads. I went to Full Sail back in 2003. I don't regret going there, I regret not taking full advantage of the facilities and the knowledge base that was my teachers and peers. School in and of itself is not a bad thing. But you really need to commit yourself to it so that…
No normal map need? But I don't understand one thing. I never did normal map before, but diffuse and normal don't have same goal, isn't it? For exemple Diffuse give life to 3D (sorry this is hard to explain with my english <_<) and normal map is for light render with adding relief on polygon? No? I'm false in explication?…
I think it's a fantastic idea. A fresh, simple modelling program taking user feedback seriously. -So the obvious first thing is : if you really want to make it a kickass app, stick around here on polycount and listen to what people have to say :P You'll turn your program into gold! (see the xnormal feedback pages) As for…
[ QUOTE ] Self teaching is great - it shows a company that you had the skills to pick up something by yourself, showing initiative. Having a degree is superb because as well helping to protect your future, it will show a prospective company that you were able to complete a series of tasks and deadlines set by others - and…
Mudbox is the most expensive unless you buy a non-commercial license which I think is about $299. This is the way I look at it: Silo= Cheap, effective modeler with sculpting. My only gripe with Silo is that you are not going to get the level of detail sculpting that you can get in Mudbox or ZB3.....but it is a dam good…
