Yeah you could simply flatten the vertex normals, this way killing the lowpoly shading. But its a manual edit that can break. We had projects where this was common practice, killing lowpoly shading as much as possible. Letting the normalmal do all lifting. That is actually correct and needed. See the image below: A displacement map / height map stores the distance between the lowpoly and the highpoly mesh surface. Like EQ said, Your lowpoly mesh that will be using the normal map in the end needs to have the same normals as the lowpoly mesh used when baking. Here's my Maya to Xnormal workflow using custom cages. It should work every time. 1. Export your highpoly mesh as an .OBJ file. An export straight from Zbrush is fine. 2. Export your lowpoly mesh from maya as an .OBJ file. Check that the .obj export settings have both normals and smoothing checked "on" before you export.… -
