Bootcamped macbooks tend to perform well. Autodesk's DRM used to be broken on apple hardware, but that seems to be fixed: http://www.vizworld.com/2009/07/apple-boot-camp-support-for-autodesk-3ds-max/ If you need a macbook for school, then I don't think you'd go wrong installing windows on the same notebook for home use. -

That seems like a negligible speed increase. And I feel like Unity must have made some ugly agreements to get that source code access from Autodesk. They don't just give that away. FBX has been a black box to everyone for decades. Not to mention the fact that Autodesk has their own competing game engine. -

Your answer is both, it can also bake your AO from the normal map. However you want, with a good speed and quality. Yes, it's autodesk stuff now, but you can wait until 2012 have it. Hopefully they will do it free. I heard Maya 2011.5 already have it if you have Premium Autodesk account. -

Yea, they changed that in 2011, it's annoying. What you should do? Practice, practice, practice. Try all the programs, Autodesk has an excellent student program where u can get their programs for free, I personally am an Autodesk fanboi, but its an awesome thing to be a fanboi of. Click on everything , see what all those buttons do, tutorials and more tutorials as well. -

Weird. What hardware are you running on? Maybe the graphics card can't handle it? Also maybe the defaults have been corrupted somehow. In Windows 8, 3ds Max stores the defaults in C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\<maxversion>. After you uninstall, delete these folders, then re-install. Maybe this will… -

I'm using 2017. However, I always encountered weird bugs in 2015 as well. I didn't use 2016 all that much. I've been using student versions and it makes me wonder if Autodesk purposely makes their student versions buggy. Also, what 3D app outside of Autodesk realm does not crash and is light on resources?
