+1 to 4790K and a LGA 1150 mobo/DDR3 - the ram and mobo will be cheaper without much difference in performance. You'll probably save somewhere around $900 or so by switching from the 5960x to the 4790K. You can pocket that money, or put some of it into a better GPU like a 970 or 980, which will help with GPU heavy apps…
I think you are putting to much effort into this program in hopes of getting some nice renders. You do not need professional level ILM type stuff here, you just need to learn to use 3DS Max effectively to show off your models. You have to remember you are not trying to get a rendering or lighting job, so why waste time…
@Sinking Nope,I haven't been able to use any mel scripts with it yet.Surprisingly,I just read on their website now that mel scripting, animation retargeting and ik handles are now possible with Maya LT but it comes with the extension 2 version.I don't know if the extension 2 version is available in the student version.…
Wrong, they matter, just not as much as in a non-synced workflow, where massaging your mesh normals can be very important. Also wrong. This works in certain cases (mostly when you have very dense meshes without extreme normal direction changes), but there are benefits to paying attention to mesh normals with a synced…
Sorry for the late update! Been a little busy and wanted to address all concerns and feedback before giving an update. Here is my final render and texture sheets!!!!.....Well final for now lol, but I would want to revisit this later. I went for a more aging and worn out look than the reference. Probably went that route…
Student versions of Autodesk keep working after you graduate, if you aren't signed up for their free student software program, do it now before your graduation. Maya, 3ds Max, and Mudbox are all on there. Don't use them commercially. You should be able to use the software until the license term has expired. Free Unreal…
Talking about lighting this tutorial might give you a good start, especially when using marmoset. Although the tutorial is focused on lighting for characters and thus not everything will be applicable or usefull for lighting hardsurface models (from my experience) it will be a good start with some valuables do's and…
Thanks for the crits :) For texture space, I will add in some assets to fill up the empty areas. The problem with unwrapping an object that is so massive in relation (flying buttresses) to the rest is a lot of the UV shells are small in comparison to the large object (of course). I will probably make the lantern and cob…
There's some work that needs to be done on the model to get this result. Because the surface isn't as smooth as it should be, you'll get a lot of bumps instead of a smooth gradient like the previous image. Plus your missing a lot of clean hard edges and straight lines. Don't be afraid to to break your model in several…
It's been a bit of a while, so I have a lot of work to dump! My latest completed 3D project was Lunen the Alchemist. I've worked on PBR in the past, but I hadn't tried stylized PBR so I wanted to give it a go! It was also my first time using Marmoset Toolbag 3 for bakes, which I really liked  model Currently I'm…
