I use a vray max scene I setup a while back, its the typical studio render setup. Works very well for me; I use that for finished models. For WIP's though I just use simple 3 point lighting setup or a zbrush best preview screenshot.

A Gamma seting of 2.2 is for when you are doing physically based offline rendering(Vray/Mentalray/etc) using a linear workflow, but a lot of people disable it for general work when not rendering. In max you make a Torus Primitive, check on "generate mapping coordinates" It will give you Vrav's bottom example. Flaagan dont give up man, shit happens. I mean I got a call from one of the best companies in my country to work for them but guess what i already was moving to UK at that time and since that time I havent been able to secure a job in any CG industry either games or full high end Vray CG stuff. Still havent given up on it.
