Wanted to stop by and say I applied and agree with Dan. Every freelance job I have done I turned in the asset first then was paid. I was under the impression that unless its a big project where half now and half later would be used this is normal.
Damm yo! when I first started, I would look at these for inspiration. yours and ryans, and one other freelancer guy. I was like, yeh I can do that but then I saw the texture work you did for MOKE. fucking mind blown!! 8)
honestly for me it was a mix of savings plus buying one at a discount from my friend when he was upgrading. Doing a little freelance on the side if you can will help a lot too if you're able. Keep in mind a cintiq is absolutely not a necessity, just a nicer alternative.
Hello Kate! I'm a full-time freelance artist wrapping up a contract at the end of December. I'll be available for full time contract work starting Jan 1. Hope to hear from you and learn more about the project! - Shawn Wiederhoeft https://shawnwiederhoeft.artstation.com/
As long as you can stay productive is the obvious answer. You have to balance that with job/school/spouse obviously but there is no real definitive number, its different for each individual. Admittedly I only have freelance experience so I dunno if that counts as breaking into the industry...
Thanks a million dude i appreciate it :) i was thinking 'Ok if i spend the next year reallly reallly pushing myself and getting a awesome looking portfolio and even do a few freelance jobs iam sure i can then approach the likes of bungie etc??'
I'd also like to know more about the legal aspect of freelancing. Especially in Canada. From what I've heard, contracting overseas, or even for a client in the United States can be a major headache. I really wish there was some sort of definitive resource for these kinds of things.
Thanks guys!! @Seforin:I will be pad locking to washroom doors to make sure Jason isn't hiding anywhere :P @Gav: Thanks for the tip, ill be sure to look at the fine print before i sign anything. @Lonewolf: do you work in-house or freelance for DE?
well yes and no Joxx. Id say you biggest problem is that u havent research enough in montreal. Ive been here for over 8 years, and All the problems u have are easily solves. Except the taxes i guess. (worse for a freelancer tho kthanks)
We still have several positions open for both freelance pixel animators and 2d background artists. Thanks to everyone who has applied so far. If you have not heard from me already I will be getting back to you soon. jobs@asorsonstudios.com
