but can you copy with animation ? I would alter my tool so that you can copy vertex color to unwrap modifer, and it creates proper animation keys in the unwrap modifer. so you could paint a frame vertex colors, copy to unwrap at frame 0, then paint again, copy at another timepoint... probably below efficiency optimum, but… -

Because you say your copying meta I assume that means you have external version control enabled in the project settings? If not then copying only /Asset/ files will always break references and stuff (you have to copy and replace the entire project). Its not really worth making copies or moving the uvs back, making copies is a pain when you need to make changes to the model or something, delete copy, make change, make copy, move uvs again, yada yada. Just move the uvs and forget about it, it works fine. The only time I ever move them back is if I'm editing my uv…
