Any polygons, other than triangles, have hidden edges breaking their surface in order to triangulate them. Be warned: If you overlay the resulting normalmap, level adjust the blue channel to go from 0-127 instead of 0-255. You can output splines as well as mesh, so you can build perfect mesh flow and then surface it in max... takes no time to build the splines since you can collide with the surface as you draw.
