Me! I have decided to go with Max. I do have Maya too, and the spacebar menu seems neat, but other than that, it feels alien to me. You really need to stop desaturating your normal map and overlaying it over your diffuse. You're negating the purpose of the normal by forcing a faux lighting on your diffuse. In Max , simply use ordinary splines for the hair. Don't even consider Nurbs in Max for this. Then you can use extrude to generate the geometry. Enable generate UV on the spline rollout and an UV unwrap on top of that to tweak the uv mapping. Then Copy/Instance the extruded spline to generate your various hair "strands".… -

I learned something new today. When you extrude a quad, you create 4 E and N Poles. E poles are Extrude poles (5 edges) and N poles are Nose poles (3 edges). I’m not sure if those are the right names though 😅 -

I'd say the elbow is a good example: I started by modelling the elbow pad since it was a specific shape and needed to be more precise, then extruded some edges out to the seam surrounding the whole elbow.
