Yep. Just assign separated materials to the polygons that you want to have different material. Then uv according. Its a fully common practice. -

Not really. Loading the OBJ is the easiest way. Practically you can also just combine and merge vertices. And don't forget to delete history. -

Why? There's nothing wrong with that practice and obsessing over "all quads" is a time wasting habit I've watched too many artists fall into. -
