As long as you are confident you will be up to your usual speed fairly quickly then its not such a big deal. Some companies will allow you to use whatever software you like but that can make things a little messy when working with other artists files etc. Our whole studio just switched to maya the beginning of this year… -

If you are going to render 500 of the same mesh at different positions, rotations and scales then technically all you need is 1 mesh data in memory. That doesnt mean that is the best way to render the objects though. These days its generally much better to batch static meshes into compound meshes which can be rendered in 1… -

The hand looks weird(it might just be the angle, if so you should change the angle imo) also, I love sss as much as the next guy, but I think there might be too much of it going on here.… -

pictures are kind of hard to see cause they are small and we're so zoomed out from the building. how exactly did you create your normals? converting the texture to a normal map via Ndo or Nvidia filter? if so, from what i can tell, its a little janky looking cause you arent act actually popping out the details in the best… -

Kat, the colum is looking good, as for the barrel and such I agree that it isn't looking quite correct, having it within a game engine will really help in figuring out any problems. As for the grenade, you arent pusing out the little pinapple parts as they feel quite shallow. The textures all need to be pushed but… -

Yeah i would say go for the quad core, i just built a very similar system to you, except a 8800, quad core q6600 and 8 gigs of ram. Think about it really, if you're doing any 3d work, and you want to say, be able to switch back and forth from photoshop/max/mudbox/zbrush/modo etc whatever you do, and maybe for example…
