Basically she is just a flat shaded low poly model with a hand painted texture. I used the character rigging tools that come with maya 2011 (they are awesome btw.) and I had a look at how blizzard does the UV layout for their WOW chars so I tried to do something similar for my model as it makes it easy to swap textures…

At the moment it is looking just that - flat, on the concept there are well defined bevels on certain sections (which read a lot better on a normal map), such as the triangles that yours just doesn't have at the moment.
