It doesn't matter what barrels do or don't look like. its his call to make a barrel look however the fuck he wants. The problem is, noone else but him would recognise it as a barrel. That's the crit that needs saying.
your 3d aint small and chubby enough to match the reference. also i suggest using a bigger patter for his backpack and everything else also... readability otherwhise u also can just use one color

@HntrLuc : damn straight, I have to admit I let the AO do the work. I was pressed to finish so I could work on something else, and I think I'll take a few minuts to make the changes you suggested.
I didn't counted polygons . that's why I forgot to spare and I've done it like so. I'm guessing that i can go down to about 400polys really easily. But i want to do something else now. Thanks for comments.
I made a cool scene for a small contest on another site. Clouds are from an image online but the wood is my own texture. Sand was done myself after getting some colours set up. Everything else is hand painted or baked AO.
