This is a valid function, but Autodesk added doesFileExist function a few versions ago. You're script is an excellent example. I've never used file encryption.
looking good! Maybe it would be helpful to paint height maps and use a utility to derive normals from those? e.g. Substance Designer or I believe the engine library even has a material function for that.

Light functions are only available on dynamic lights. So the most important cost will be the fact that you use a light function, but that you use a dynamic light.
