Lightmapping covers over the diffuse at a higher level, usually resulting in the shader reverting to the 'fallback'. Essentially you end up with diffuse x (8 x lightmap) meaning your original diffuse in it's 0-1 range, by a lightmap with a range of 0-8. pretty sure you could blend as many textures as you want by using if nodes. ie if red is 0-50 then use texture 1 51-100 use texture 2. you get less range of colour information to blend with but as many textures as you want. realistically there's no reason you couldnt put 100 textures in each colour channel if you were… -

Well the Green comes from when a edge hasn't been welded to the edge that lays next to it, next time take a look at your uvws and see how nothing is welded together on the uvw, it doesn't mean that the mesh isn't welded it means the uvws arnt welded together. Id imagine this is an optimization. you dont really want to have to re normalize every time you do a calculation. I think the idea of HDR is the lighting isnt calculated with a 255 maximum.
