Thanks Vig, nice link. It's an absolute bitch to do though as I said, there are two pivot points for each section which makes it tricky. I ended up just placing them by hand which wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I'm just thinking ahead though, what would be a good way of building a low poly chain? I'm aiming for… -

thanks for the links guys that really helped me a lot to understand the new techniques with the new engines so clarifying, for a character its a low poly model then a high poly model for the normal map then you need a specular map and a colour map. one last thing do you uv map the low poly model or just the high poly model… -

polycoutn seems fine to me for current gen vehicle tires, the material could use some tweakin tho, the rim and the tire look like they are made out of the same material, the bolts are not popping,, maybe a spec would help the normal map an high poly look nice tho. maybe try an distribute the edges of the low to line up… -

My vote goes for Half life 2 with full normal map, model the hi res character and the low res and bake down the normal map, then supply both hi res and low res in the SDK and the participating artists can change the model how every they like, even modify the hi res for new normal maps. A good artist is a good artist whether he uses 3 million polygons or 3 thousand. If your stuff looks good that's the most of it. Maybe take an existing high-quality scene or piece and turn it into a next-gen asset, to show you have some familiarity with the pipeline and techniques. If your stuff looks awesome as cinema art…
