As I recall, between Quake 3 and Doom 3 he locked himself away from the internet and everyone for some weeks and wrote about a dozen experimental rendering engines. Including voxel based stuff. Only after that did he decide to go with Doom3's normal mapping and stencil shadows. And he did sparse voxel octree based research… -
