Very cool. I've been trying full time freelancing for the last few months and wanted to diversify so I was pretty interested in picking this up but I'm trying to watch my expenses.
I've seen soooooo many bad animals in big games. Sure, I don't think there's room for an animal artist at a studio but there's a possibility of it working out for a freelancer. Plus, most monsters are animals.
Depends on how they choose to see it. If your content can make your way into a competitors game, then you are helping them compete. They dont care so much if its via freelance or turbosquid.

Wow this thread is old! I've graduated now, and I teach kids how to make video games, run the local AAUGA chapter, and freelance from time to time. Here's something new:
However it seems that the Steam version might not be good for Indie or Freelance developers, their language is kind of murky and they haven't done much to clear it up yet. I would hold out for this until they clarify.
This isn't entirely true. There are pretty stable jobs in the vfx studios of London. I've had friends work at a single place for years. Some people prefer working freelance because of it's higher income.
