What casting method are you using? Cage or offset? Because this effect might be also achieved by resetting the cage and not pushing it back out.

Scrapes on the stock rotation axis really makes a difference. I'll agree that the metal could read better. Push the spec a bit more.

I settled on the astronaut being in the middle. I liked having the crash scene on the stock and I felt it pushed the composition forward on the rifle.

Turn on Soft Selction in the Modify Panel under the Sub Object options. That will help. There is also a push/pull paint brush rollout in there too.
