There are a whole host of factors at play here: Low/high poly relationship, uv layout, smoothing groups, tangent basis, synched or non-synched, single or multiple smoothing groups.... As Bagelhero said post images of all the above. Also, there's a wealth of info here from stickies and previous posts. -

That UV layout is indeed not very optimial, but the uv's being too close to the border line is incorrect Wozner. You can have them as close as you want, just make sure you have space inbetween your islands. More info here: https://udn.epicgames.com/Three/LightMapUnwrapping.html -

Thanks Tom! Appreciate the feedback. I'll work on definitely changing the black background color of the model or just removing them (not sure I can rerender 1 of them I think the original file is lost). Anyone else have any input on the layout? Too busy or does it work? -

I'm back! I got distracted... Anyway here's my progress, please feel free to give feedback. I'm still not very happy with the floating rocks texture and layout (besides the main one) and the tree doesn't actually have a spec map yet... Overall it needs some polish. but... -

Holy crap, that's absolutely amazing man!! Your lighting, town layout, terrain, houses, props, everything!!! Great work!! The only niggle I have, is the wattle fencing. The weave is wrong on the fences, though right on the houses. It's extremley minor and totally inconsequential, I'm just a stickler for small details :) -

Just saw this now at 3am, so had a pop at blocking out the scene. Is the room a rectangle? or is there an off cut for the door area? as when I placed the door block, I had no room for the window. I think someone said they would post a layout they was doing? can't remember who it was. -

No thumbs ftw no one likes click-clicking all over the place. If your worried about there being too much content you could have your older stuff on a seperate single page layout with links to both. P.S. Don't listen to everyone your stuffs not that good... ...jk -

I have a whole stash of these old SGI: Can't stand the "clickable scroll wheel" layout. And never gotten used to a thumb-button. Best thing is you can actually run them through the dish-washer (if you remove the circuit board) and it comes out like brand new :) -
Re: AO question - Xnormal
Sometimes I want the AO to mask all lighting... including diffuse, specular, reflection, ambient cube, etc. So then I apply it as an overall multiplier. Also it's similar to a lightmap in that it sometimes requires a separate UV layout than the diffuse UV, if the diffuse is mirrored or overlapped/reused. YMMV of course.
