We are evolved to see strong horizontal and vertical lines, so those sort of patterns are the easiest to spot. There are tech solutions, like shaders, but there are also design and art solutions. The problem happens when you either set explicit normals manually or with script, import an FBX, import an obj file with normals and then edit the number of vertices on the mesh. To avoid the problem always add an edit poly to imported objects, and don't adjust normals… -

If you're using UDK, bake using XNormal because this is less of a problem. (look up synced normals) In any case it's much better to use both a UV and normal split on 90 degree corners. You don't get the gradient issue and you also have split vertices there anyway if you've cut the UVs up so performance is identical. -

Good tiling textures should not be obviously tiling, right now there are dark elements that line up creating repeating vertical dark lines. Yes, every time you have a hard edge, there should be a UV split with edge padding. First mesh looks much better. Maybe in this case it would be easier to start from box, give it some basic shape and then make cuts where you need it. What about first place on the left - you probabely just have to use connect to make as much cuts as you need, move some vertices if needed and simply extrude.
