99% of the time the UV layout should look something like this for the face, with some variations on how you deal with mirroring. the front of the face should be cylindrical mapped in one piece, and I'd suggest never mirroring across the face so you can have some asymmetry going on.
Ok some handpainted stuff. Took about 2h (modelling, uving, texturing). Of course texture is wip. Ohhh its 1024x256 and flat shading. And thats how uv layout looks like... I feel like I don't really use this 1024x256 as well as it could be used.
depends on the style of the game (in both mechanics and visuals), in this instance id say modular assets would be the way to go, sketching the layout and what assets you think you will initially need is a good idea to breakdown the work , or even just blocking it in using the geometry tools in Unreal be useful.
Thanks Sharvo! That's a good idea; now that I can actually look at them and see what the strengths and weaknesses are I should be able to incorporate some of the strong elements together into a very interesting layout. Thanks for the advice and I hope you'll come back to see what comes of it!
in the past few weeks I've seen 3 portfolios here that used this exact same, awful, layout. Did you all go to the same school or something? Simplify this to a small gallery of 6-10 of your best works, contact info and resume on a neutral background. Nothing else.
Since you mention Game-art workflow, I suggest 3DS MAX or Maya, the former more so. If you are open to ZBrush you have topology and unwrapping tools within it, if not TopoGun and Headus UV Layout respectively. xNormal for baking. Add Photoshop and you're all set ^_^
quick normal map question, i notice all the normal map texture sheet posted here, they all have purple BG. how to do it? because i render mine & it's black in the BG texture sheet. while uv layout is normalized. is it affect the normal map quality?
I'd keep it even cleaner than that, the proposed layout similar to Bram Eulaers portfolio is a good choice. Although I'd spent a tad more time on the content spacing, since it seems to be irregular on his site - no offense. I wouldn't over complicate or design the portfolio - it's not the website they are there to look for.
It is off 1st ave! I only used textures though. The actual layout was something I found on flickr. Heading off to GDC tomorrow so I won't have time to do a wire shot but I'll try to share some of the textures when i get back.
Progress on the NEW Japanese Swamp.. I just wanted to post up my progress to see if I was headed in the right direction...this is still WIP, Diffuse only.. After I finish texturing everything and finishing the level layout, I will throw this in UDK for some kick ass lighting.
