go into stroke > modifiers > roll distance and crank that up, now do a new stroke with your claytube brush :)

Dont know about Modo but in Max you could use splines in conjunction with the sweep modifier and a custom shape.

I was simply hand editing the normals of the problematic areas. I applied the edit normals modifier, and tweaked from there.

Select all your verts and hit "create sym" from the right panel or modify menu -> create symmetry.
