One thing I love (cause I got used to it) in Modo is the ability to have your gizmo wherever you want it to be (right click to set it where you want) then move / scale whatever. It's got a nice flow to it, but if you're serious about getting into digital landscape painting you really should be starting with colors (atmospheric perspective) and a solid perspective like n88tr said. Good read, thanks for writing this out. I personally prefer cage meshes, they are the cleanest solution in my opinion. It can be an additional pitfall, but I think you need it anyway. If you have an object with lots and lots of cylinders, adding in additional loops to fix skewing/wavyness can quickly add up to quite a lot… -

I agree low1 is better. But you may want to soften the edges. It may look a bit wierd but once you do the bake and see it with the normal map I think it will return better results then having that hard edge there.
