Hey man, really like this project :) I feel like you have a scale issue on the pillars. To me, compared to the concept, they look too short and maybe a bit too wide, which makes your 3D less impressive or intimidating than the concept, less vertical. Great work thought, looking forward to see more ! -
Re: using dynamesh as a high poly?
Its all polygons and vertices in the end. Sometimes its quicker to make a model with dynamesh. Sometimes you have an existing basemesh that works well enough on its own, sometimes you have to create one. (You can replace 'quicker' with 'better' too; when revisions are involved it can be easier to have lighter geometry) -

Alrighty, I think I'll stick with 3D-Coat. Looks like my nitpicks with it are really minor compared to the things it does right. I think I found another problem with my staff. I baked the normal map with it in a vertical position, but it's mostly horizontal in the game. Does the orientation matter at all with normal maps? -

Box bones? Do you mean you're using mesh objects for bones? When you export to FBX it converts those to simple bone nodes (no vertices, no triangles, just transforms). So you could use million-triangle meshes for your bones, and it wouldn't matter. What matters is the skinned mesh, and the number of bones assigned to it. -

People reinventing the wheel ^^ For unity, fbx doesnt support vertex color by face, but dae does. I begged for a Maxscript on cgtalk to split vertices by color, in order to export with fbx to unity. What are you using for reference? Things I see that you could improve: The legs are too straight, looking at a few pig images I see that the back knees draft in and then the lower limb goes vertical. Also the underside of the jaw looks way to flat, even lean pigs have some roundness there. Kinda like this: -

Nope i don't get it. You have to mesure the physical length of those boxes in max. A pixel doesn't make any sense. It could be mapped to anything. "squares would clearly be rendering vertically" I don't get the meaning of this either. Make a drawing or a snapshot of your scene coz i'm affraid i cant picture it. -

K... thanks, that's all good to know. So basically the most straightforward solution to this now and in future is to just avoid scaling an entire object always. Great, I'll just start over soon and get more practice in. Should everything else not affect things like Inset, i.e. pulling around vertices, cutting etc? -

Got it. That helps a lot. Pretty soon I need to take a little time and get familiar with rigging a little, but this definitely eases my worries for now. So really, all that time spent connecting hidden parts just isn't necessary because the rigger can more or less paint which vertices will be attached to a joint? -

Good! I like the overall look. I can really only nit-pick some things: The wood of the stairs is pretty dark. It may just be that I'm hungry for lunch, but they remind me of chocolate. The vertical wooden supports could get darker near the bottom like the stone wall does. Thats about it, good job!
