You'd think I'd learn that tutorials are generally incorrect. Unfortunately I followed a tutorial on how to unwrap in 3ds max and it said to use mesh selects and uvw map modifiers, when you could actually just do it all inside the unwrap uvw... facepalm.
Have you tried the Marmoset milk scene tutorial? The idea is to render a super high res image using both additive and dithered transparency, then scale down the image in Photoshop. I tried it and it works really well. Tutorial: http://www.marmoset.co/toolbag/learn/glass

I'm using Pluralsight at the moment for learning Maya and I'm finding it really useful so far. Also, to avoid the above aforementioned "tutorial syndrome" I would recommend doing your own project between tutorials to apply what you learn as you go. :)

I would suggest doing a fresh new model with the skills you learnt from this grenade tutorial. Is this also your own model? As I know the tutorial artist supplies his own model, which is identical to this. Either way good stuff that your improving
