It should be noted that the 'X' key toggles the transform gizmo off and on for 3dsmax before version 2014. Those who remember it's annoying existence will know why it was changed to open search. :)
Little update here: Did the hand with help of the X-Ray picture SupRore provided and then tried to pose it relaxed like in the wireframe reference. So no tracing at all this time :D
Looks really good. The only thing that I noticed that seemed off is the screws. The "X"s are too big and looks like they reach all the way out. Small nitpick.
When you output the .ASE file format using actor X, you need to checkmark 'convert to smooth groups' in export options... other than that I can't help.
only thing i can think of is creating some planes in max along the x/y/z axis and importing them as a subtool, making them visible/invisible as needed.
This is gold !! Have been waiting for this for ages but now its finally here. Hopefully the ground textures are not 2 x 2 m and everything bigger is done by tiling! That would be hilarious.
Just tried X form, was ineffective. Smooth and edit normals modifiers have not solved problem either. Example of my problem: smooothing in 3ds max: smooothing when exported:
