Depends on any number of things. What material library is this material from? Is it an arch viz mat, mental ray mat, etc? Refraction settings in the material itself play a big role in how they render. Malcom, I also use that technique, but I'd highly recommend using the "Vector Renderer" in maya to render your wireframe. That way you get very crisp non-jagged lines and you can render at any resolution and it will match your AO render perfectly. You might just have some of the usual Viewport 2.O renderer issues when it comes to anti-aliasing - which might be tied to a driver issue, or not - you could tried multi-sampling it in the viewport2 settings and see if it look better (shouldn't have such thick and blurry lines indeed).
