Was that the high poly mesh that you baked the normal and AO from? Or did you add a turbosmooth or mess with the smooth options in maya first? -

All good tips. As for the triangle fans at the corners (as opposed to the cylinders), they are fine like that in my book. The alternative would be very long thin triangles.
