Movies are not games, with painting you can easily hide your skill level. And painting out errors is not possible in a games engine like it is in a movies.
Have you tried running a command on the select edges to see if anything actually happens, to distinguish between a graphical error or general Maya bug?
You could have your envelope at 0 and use "closest to envelope" Chances are, since source and target meshes are the same, there will be a minimum amount of errors.
