As throttlekitty said above, bevel (at least in maya) is not meant for what you are doing. It tends to try to split the flow between geometry, which would be good if you were beveling corners, not so much in cases like this. So try offset edge loop, split edge loop and collapse edge ring to get the density you desire.

add more sides to your cylinder? It may also help to shrink your low poly so that none of it is sticking out of the highpoly. Other causes may be your smoothing groups, is it all set just set to 1 smoothing group? it may help to seperate the groups for each on of those rings. hope that helps! btw, love your portfolio

loving it, really deep detail there, and it pops really nicely. the skin pulling around the rings is a great touch, the addition to his ankle helps balance out his lower leg too, I would still say it seems a tad short from his knee to his foot but that's just me . what apps are you using to make these guys?
