@Synthesizer Check out the UVProject modifier, you can set a plane as projector and give it any position or scale you want.

Try the "ProOptimzer" modifier in max. This is my 15 second attempt at it: Gives you a starting point, then go polishing until it's good!

You can use the Skin Wrap modifier to transfer skinning information from a low-res model to a higher-res one.

You can always simply copy the modifier, delete it, reset xforms, and then paste it back on. This preserves your skin, projection, etc.

I'd perhaps add a Push modifier to the rope, and maybe a mixture of push/relax until it looks a little more "rope"ish. :)

Uhhh, its smooth preview(3) right? Just go to Modify>Convert>Smooth Mesh Preview to Polygons. The crease will be permanent.
