Yeah I guess in general new ideas from new people are harder to sell(can we trust them?), and the people arent getting these sort of games like Wasteland and Shadowrun. your sketches and line work are amazing and you have developed your own style. Your personality really shines through in 2d but its a different story in 3d. If you really really want to keep pushing the 3d part im sure you will get to a decent level but why arent you interested in continuying your illustration work??
its looking pretty good, very neat thats for sure! Personally I think you may have lost quite a lot of the angular joe mad style, the silhouette is looking rather smooth and soft. Also his proportions arent as heroic as the concept, for example his shoulders should be further apart, his torso more of a v shape.
Well the reason ptex removes the need for uvs is because it auto unwraps, and only does it nicely when working with quads, any software could easily auto unwrap your model. The concept of 3d painting is what really removes the need for manual uv layout, unfortunately there arent really any good tools for 3d painting yet.

the last one reads more like rockery plastic instead of rock, i think its because of the details you gave in the sculpt they arent "sharp" enough , they seem like plastiline melted. but still i like the texture and i dont think it needs a specular :) keep going ! try making something more complex tho man ;)
