From memory you have to select diffuse only in the vertex paint modifier, then hit "assign"

for the error above (with the mesh being triangles), throw an edit mesh modifier onto the model and then export it.

You should not use the Slice option in the Symmetry modifier, because that's what gives you these vertices.

Also put the symmetry modifier bellow turbosmooth, it give you better results on smooth surfaces.

Not sure about freeform tools, but there is a push modifier that will "inflate" the model. Use a soft touch though.
