UiToolkit does that too and its free, it even supports multi sprite sheets one for regular resolution and another one 2x for retina. http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/87917-Prime31-UIToolkit-Multi-Resolution-GUI-Solution-Ready-for-Use...and-it-s-free? worked for me so far
both should work. if the PCI Express 1x slot is free (the small white thingy on the motherboard) then just put a card in there. Cards usually have more/bigger antennas than USB sticks so I'd wager they have better reception as well. If it's not free then get a USB stick.
I have to agree with Rick. I model and paint 40+ hours which is enough for me. I need time away from the computer to recharge creativly. Getting a job in the industry was a great thing for me because it ment my free time could be just that, free time.

I say start with something simple and free like Wings3D or Blender or a free old copy of Carrara. They are perfectly good and there's no need to be indoctrinated into buying some expensive software, no individual artist should be buying(if you know the fundamentals it wont take long to get up to speed in any new software)
