Almost always the first option*, even outside VR. You might have a unique 4K texture for a special door, but 8K is too large for 99.9% of texture use cases. *You don't combine materials per se, you layer textures together with masks, vertex painting, and/or secondary UV channels.
Thanks for the questions people! Let me start off by saying in case you missed it, we just released a quick tutorial on creating custom presets: [ame=" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXPJ-SjkPko&context=C2fef4ADOEgsToPDskJBk-4VJF67i1aChJ0nxYWR&hd=1"]nDo2 tutorials: Custom Presets (+UDK) - YouTube[/ame] More is on the way,…
We used this on the last game I worked on. Had a photoshop doc with layers that looked like this:~mask - gloss <pure red layer set to multiply> [layers composing gloss map] - reflection <pure blue layer set to multiply> [layers composing reflection map] - dirt <pure green layer set to multiply> [layers composing dirt…
The Outliner is pretty awesome. I use it all the time, and I'm an old-school Max user. Someone already wrote an Outliner maxscript for Max 2008, which is cool, because while the new Scene Explorer is quite handy, it's also fairly slow and not integrated very well (such as not being able to single-click select anything…
Heres a method I use for this kind of thing. Be aware this was just a 2 minute example done on my lunch break today; normally I would put a bit more time in it. Make an overlay layer above your wood base and pick a color then with you paint brush set to all layers and about an 80 tolerance click somewhere on the image…
Thanks Haiddasalami for the referral! =) I made a nearly 7 hour beginner's guide to Cascade, and 3dmotive bought the rights out from me so they can add it to their library. From what I hear it is being released on their site very soon (hopefully this month). I think it'll be a good starting point if you want to learn VFX…
But what if I wanted to adjust the cage to prevent waves, would it be fair for me to call mayas baking tools unprofessional when it lacks an adjustable cage? Lack of comparable tools is a downside of blender, especially when most of max nowdays is built up from things the community wrote, and things like popular plugin…
I agree with Lucas. I think your post processing is too strong and is making the whole scene look flat. Maybe try bringing up the saturation a bit? I know a war torn trench would be very brown and desaturated, but I think bringing back the colors in the corrugated metal would help make it pop and look more interesting. I…
Update: Here's the texture for the M19A1 Flare rifle grenade. Reference: I'll be going back and fixing the issues with the full stock once I'm finished texturing the rest of the pieces. Let me know if there's anything I should change on my textures. Edit: Silly me. Forgot the ref I used for the grenade. Also, if you're…
While I like your idea, the fact still remains that it's the forum users that will be voting on the pieces and not always industry professionals with good knowledge of character design and what not. From what I can tell, many of the character designs we see in today's games are designs that would appeal to the…
