Re: UDK Lightmap Resolutions
With UDK, Lightmass, a dominant directional light and decent lightmap uv's you shouldn't need much more than a 32x32 for each object. The dominant directional light has settings for shadow softness as well that can really sharpen up the quality of your shadows, or soften them for things like sunlight falloff. -

It's typically a bad idea to have interpenetration between two soft-skinned animated objects, though, as you'll get one floating over the other and not looking connected as you animate. If the verts surrounding the horn and the horn itself are 100% weighted to a single bone you'll be OK, otherwise you should merge them. -

You need more soft light because you can not see much. The floor seems to be too mirror. I would think about atmosferic fog maybe (or just test it) On the walls it would be nice to see a larger variety of roughness. In addition, it would be nice to think of a better composition when doing it -

The image you posted isn't showing up, but I followed this tutorial for a simple setup to make renders look good. http://vimeo.com/27687559 The only thing I would recommend doing is softening the light by adjusting the light angle to 5-15. This will make the shadows nice and soft and a more natural look. -

Could be a smoothing group issue (Max) or soft/hard edge thing (Maya). Could also be some bad baked ambient occlusion overlayed on your diffuse texture. It might even just be the nature of polygonal shading. It's kind of hard to tell, a wireframe image might help. What app are you using? -

It looks like you don't actually have a high poly. Technically your low poly cant see you high poly because it doesn't have any tapper or soft edges. It looks like you have a normal 6 sided cube, and the low poly can't see the side faces. -

Well I am not a character guy that much but I can see that the eyebrows look weird, maybe it has a kind of plastiline appearance, I mean, they look soft and it is like they are melting or something, but man, honestly I really like the nose a lot! You are doing a grat job here, keep it up! -

More experimenting. This time I was trying to tackle how to add baby hairs or stray hair to the head. Part of the problem is the dithering caused by the opacity mask and how harsh the resulting hair looks. I ended up using the same translucent material for the eyelashes and eyebrows since the opacity remains soft and sharp. -

I would use Editable Poly, select the end cap of the helix in Polygon mode, then use Soft Selection and move/rotate the cap to match the straight piece. If you want precise loops, make a Cylinder primitive and use a Twist modifier. You can adjust the Twist center to create the Helix radius.
