I wouldn't call vertex lighting modern, it's been around for quite some time, we used it a lot on ps2 it's quite a painful way to make lighting. -

Something that did a halfway decent job of auto UV mapping. Something that did a halfway decent job of polygonal reduction to take the pain out of making LOD's. -
