With 2011, there's a bug with OBJ imports. Try adding an STL check modifier, then collapsing the stack.

You could try the free MakeHuman program. You modify a human and export an OBJ of it.

Create a box with a fair amount of segmentation. Add a Spherify modifier. Should work fine.

That's for the projection modifier. Try not to have the hi and low meshes insersecting between each other.
