ZacD haven't looked at mirror's edge in a long time but for the outdoor stuff there wouldn't be an issue because they use white diffuse textures, this means they can use the 0-1 range and just use lightmaps to darken the image as they don't need any overbright from the lighting. Keep in mind that this may not be an issue with small textures but it can quickly get crazy with 4k ones. You are essentially using double memory when you have an alpha channel. Yes, Neox is quite correct here. But the thing to keep in mind is, if you were going to use hard edges anyway, splitting your UVs will add no extra verts.
