Hey guys... I'm really quite glad to see a few with the same theme!... Just remember that Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones also share a similar theme, but there are so many cool ways to share different viewpoints, techniques, styles and strategies... Can't wait to see your updates!! :)
Thanks for the feedback guys, tried to work on it and made some more tweaks to the textures. I added an AO ring on the eyes and made the pupil just a bit bigger so hopefully thats looking better now. I think im done with the textures unless there is any other feedback.
Throwing my hat into the ring. Did a quick Colour Block Out and a Block out in 3Ds max. Nothing sinister or out of the ordinary in this place. Just an old man's basement. Except I only had a Alien to use for the scale ref. But he has wrinkles... that counts right?
I've read a bit on them but I cant see a way to get the highlights to randomly carry slightly (noticable on the 2nd ring from the edge) and have this material style only on the metal and not the paint (As you can tell i usually try to avoid texturing etc) Any ideas?
Got that too. There is a fix that does always work for me. When you open Zbrush, your doc is empty, right? draw a cube, a ring or any other standard tool. Hit edit and make a polymesh. Press ctrl-Z. Then load your tool you want to work with.
in your viewport settings, enable shade selected faces- sounds like thats what you're after. edit: oh in the unwrap window.. leme see I cant get it to display a red ring in the uv window, but if you do mean in the viewport then yeah it is shade selected faces
think he was refering to the cuts, like the big honking circular hole, keep the whole, but you don't need to cut it into the wall, you can use an 6 or 8 sided hole and just drop the other ring into the hole looks exactly the same without all that extra polies.
Good stuff dude. I'd recommend breaking up the smooth surfaces (like the wheels and cannon) by adding a few bumps'n'dents... kinda like the metal-rings on the barrel. It doesn't make sense that the texture conveys such a worn-off surface but the actual surface (conveyed by the highlight) remains perfectly smooth.
sometimes I listen to the soundtracks from The Lord of The Rings trilogy, especially when I'm working on fantasy stuff. Sometimes I listen to some crazy shit like Lightning Bolt (the songs that sound like Captain Caveman) The majority of the time I don't listen to any music.
I think you could take out one or two of the rings in the forearm and it would still keep it's shape. Also, you mention that you're working off a concept...would you mind posting the concept? It would just give a better idea of what it's supposed to look like.
