Well, the best thing would probably be to start off with some mod-teams, show that you can actually put stuff into fully functional games. Try to get some clients while doing that, post on different forums etc etc, contact people. Work for cheap etc.
Do you have the game? in that case u can use the modelviewer and load all those models and check polycount etc in there. I know its not answer to the question but its pretty good since you can also see lod's and wireframes, check animations etc etc
You could start a SeigeCon Polycount meetup thread on general discussion! Also post your portfolio in your signature on polycount. That way people can be like "Oh, youre avenali312 on Polycount, I saw your work, cool stuff, etc etc etc, let's talk".
