I've used a similar technique to get "directional" AO before, but I feel it doesn't usually work very well on characters unless they're going in an engine that doesn't support much in the way of realtime lighting. Well i've never really done anything bake wise in modo, but modo lacks a bunch of other essential tools that any mature baking app has, like ability to set up a cage, or any way besides a material tag to set up smoothing groups/hard edges. looks nice but swift3d is just vectored frames based on 3d. for real time 3d your options are thin on the ground. Director can run openGL 3d quite well, however there are no fancy things like real time shadows.
