You can use Daz3D as a reference to practice anatomy (its free to use). You can turn off textures and dial in muscle mass. Also the sculpture you chose to use has pretty much perfect balace. Check out the posing center line. -

I think you can probably get what you're looking for for not too much money. I second looking into getting super sculpy, I personally really love the stuff. I think it's got the best of both worlds from clay and plasticine: Always ready, doesn't dry out, doesn't make a huge mess, bakes nicely, etc. Just overall great… -

You don't have to limit yourself to just Zbrush. You can also use Mudbox (student is free). There's also Sculptris which is free as well. -

Sculptris is nice, free and basically like playing with clay. UE4 has a ton of content examples, and is free as well, a kid should have fun looking at the included levels seeing how they are made. -

Dude register with autodesk as a student and then get free 3ds max mudbox maya whatever you want. Get sculptris it's free and made by the same guys who made zbrush. When you can pay for it get the real deal. -
