use Path Deform (WSM) instead of PathDeform. It's at the top of the modifiers list.

it works in editable poly aswell. But you're right, not in the Edit Poly modifier.

What app? In Maya, there's Mesh -> Average Vertices. In Max, there's Relax modifier.
