Nothing in that vid is so radically different than using the weight tool in Max. Select torso verts, full weight them to the spine, select leg verts, full weight to leg. Select the verts inbetween where you want to blend the influence between them. Press blend.
I don't remember where I read this, I think it was from a comic book author: using a standing desk means transfering the stress from your back to your knees \ legs, so make sure you're not worse with your legs than you are with your back.

I've tried the method of setting a subtool to subtractive, merging it into the other subtool and then dynameshing but it's appending it instead of removing it like in my original screenshots. Does it still happen when you start a new scene and merge all the objects from the original scene in it? This happened to me before. As soon as I started assigning a second uv channel to a mesh the default became 2. Really annoying. Merging it into a new scene fixed it for me.
Make a mel button with thisxform -ws -a -rp 0 0 0 Changes the rotation pivot only, use -sp for the scale pivot. I'm no good at mel or scripting so I can't figure out how to string them together, but it should do what you're looking for.
Some good stuff. I think the bug is the weakest. The legs seem very uncharacteristically rounded. (I think) most bugs have very sharp angular legs..not rounded ones. But that's probably a personal tastes type of thing. What's your aim with these models? Characters for games? Cinematic?
I'm going to scotland tomorrow as well... apparently its going to be COLD. Which leads me full circle to no-pants. I've tried - lord knows I have - but I'm damned if my legs just do not get too cold. Not for me, the subtractive leg clothing lifestyle.
