Yeah, topology still matters. It still has to light well. If there are a lot of them on screen, then wasted detail (like the triangles inside your eyehole, or the extra edgeloops below the nose and around the mouth) may reduce rendering performance because those are extra vertices that have to be transformed & lit. If all you're doing is that, you might as well do a two sided material, right? What's the point in duplicating it? The reason you're seeing all that black is because you've duplicated a two sided mesh and flipped the normals inwards. Just enable backface culling and you'll see that you won't really have to scale it at all… -

Reset xform will do the trick but it can be like using a nuke to kill a fly. It will reorient the objects local pivot to the world, which for animators can be a bit disastrous. Like Piflik said its a case of the scale transform data needing to be cleared out. You can do this by going to the Hirearchy tab > Reset > Scale… -
