In my debugging adventures, I've found that it's possible to create static mesh sockets in Blender by creating an empty and naming it with the prefix "SOCKET". I agree a better UI would be great but I don't know how much can I modify max's UI with the SDK. Right now I'm focusing on creating some useful modeling tools. Yeah max's modeling tools are great and I don't intend to replace them, but there is room for other more task specific tools.

More rock stuff. Here's a first pass on a chunkier texture. I intend on coming back around and adding in moss and other grimy buildup. This was literally a 10 minute job after I got all the maps baked out. I think the longest part was making the rock base seamless. I included a gif showing the texture breakdown.
