@MACHIN3 cool stuff , except for the noise/too white edge grunge the reuslts look fantastic. Did you make a custom shader to get the mesh decals working in inside of unity? Last time I checked you needed a custom shader to do the decals in unity.
If your goal is to do some freelance work as well as work in Unity, I would recommend looking at Modo first. You wont really face the kind of limitations that come with Maya LT, and it will cover all your bases in one package. It plays nicely with Unity as well.
Well, I googled "learn unity" for you and got this for you. The free version of Unity does not cast shadows by default. It may be harder getting a scene looking great. I am glad you are 'completely open to this' because learning a game engine is completely up to you.
I've done a lot of vertex coloring work in 3ds Max, and in Unity. The Vertex Paint modifier can be a bit clunky here and there, but it's pretty versatile. Check my Sketchbook for examples. Unity store had a bunch of tools, at least a few years ago when I was using it.
You need a shader that supports vertex color blending. Both in 3ds Max (for creation) and in Unity (for display). Although I think there is a vc tool in the Asset Store, so you could do all the vc work in Unity. In max, you use the Vertex Paint modifier.
JOSE.FUENTES We have used Vray render for the Hi-Poly shots. The lighting is pretty simple if you know Vray. We've posted an article about optimizing graphics for Alien Smash in Unity. Have a look! http://loknar.com/alien-smash-graphics-optimization-with-unity-engine/
Why does your object have 10 materials in the first place? Typically the model I load into substance is the same model from my unity assets folder. Also, don't forget that you can load the substances directly into unity and skip exporting all together.
No we used Marmalade SDK for our first games but changed to Unity for our latest game. Always nice with multi platform support but a great tool is way better. As an artist Unity is like home :P Thanks! Yeah lightmapping really gives the art some depth
Don't talk about a program unless you know what it is, use google, it is your friend. Unity isn't a modeling application, it is a game engine. And it has a store you can sell assets made from any 3d application. http://unity3d.com/unity/asset-store/
